Nissan Almera Exhaust Problem

I have had some material, which I assume is some kind of lining somewhere inside the exhaust, coming out of the exhaust pipe. I took it to a garage who said it was what I thought and the only effect of this would be a noisier exhaust and it was nothing serious. However, a relative told me it was serious and I should take it somewhere else to get it fixed. I am getting rid of the car next week but don't want to pass it on knowing there is something seriously wrong with it, but neither do I want to pay for a new exhaust if it isn't necessary. Advice please.

It's probably horse hair, or something similar, used for sound deadening in the silencer box.

I think the garage is correct that it is not a serious problem.

You could try cutting it off, though a potential buyer would probably see it.

Other solutions are to ring around the exhaust centres for the cheapest back box replacement. You could then boast to a potential buyer that it has a brand new back box, and wave the receipt as proof.

Alternatively point out the problem to a buyer, so they are aware of it, and don't come back to you about it. The problem is it might frighten them off, or they might use it to bargain a bigger price drop than otherwise.
