kiel
Keel? There's a keel Canal and a traditional lyric, The Keel Row
ignore that^ Google says Kiel Canal.
Sandy - think it is the KIEL canal. That's why the OP is asking which way the clue works.

Opinion divided? Oh dear!
Crossed posts as usual.
Keel (sounds like Kiel) is a poetic name for a a ship.
mra1, go for the majority view. :-)

Thanks everyone - consensus at last! I will go with Kiel
Go with dannyk13 - he's right.

Danny K13 - I knew Keel was poetic for ship - just did not know whether the setter was looking for that or for the Kiel Canal - thanks anyway for your input
Very ambiguous clue but I think Kiel(canal)is correct as sounding refers to Keel (poetic ship)
Not ambiguous: the clue says 'this canal' so that must surely be the def, i.e. Kiel.
...and it's the poetic ship (keel) that takes a sounding- so i think the answer sounds like 'keel'.
I'd definitely go for KIEL
