Puzzled by 21a: "Audibly equate to a simple plant (6)." *i*h*n. It must be"lichen". Can anybody explain why?

Sounds like liken
pronounced as if it has a hard "K" in the middle, not "litchen", which is incorrect.
So therefore "liken" (equate) sounds (audibly) as "lichen"

Thank you - I'd always thought it was pronounced "litchen"....which Chambers does show as an alternative pronunciation.
