Good fun and a clever grid - I have sorted the 10 letter one but the 11 letter one seems to have 3 possibilities for the highlighting none of which seems to me to be "roughly appropriate"

22dn- Part of a squint? (7)
Hi x_word_fan.

It is there and forms a closed shape.

Mampara, That's one which needs adjustment. Think of a synonym for "having a squint".
Should have added, I agree that this was good fun and a cleverly constucted grid. "Titanic" theme next week?
Any chance of an empty grid; paper shop all out od telegraphs today.
Thank you

I have the 11 letter essential but can't see the 10 letter one. Any pointers?
Hi Haggis58!

Think roughly diagonal symmetry and you should see the appropriate position.

haggis - re the 10 letter- it starts in row 11
You have given me sufficient clues to find the other essential but I am obviously useless at word searching and just can't see it. Ho-hum!
Question Author
Haggis I presume you have the right word! Go NW from the first letter in row 11 then N,W,S,E
Thanks - got it now! Whew!
I have only one answer to find and that is 6 ac. I have the 2nd , 3rd, 5th and 6th letter of the word needed, but cannot find a suitable answer anywhere. Could someone give me some very broad hints for this . I have managed to complete erverything else asked for since 6 ac does not affect the essentials.
THank you in advance.

The word start with a letter right at the end of any dictionary
I only got around to this today because of the exciting events in Augusta.

As others have said, it was fun with a well constructed grid. I did find though that contrary to the preamble there were a couple of words not in Chambers.
Good afternoon All and a belated Happy Easter........it's raining here!
An interesting puzzle I think, have one or two odds and ends to tie up including the 10/11 shapes. Am a bit confused by your instruction x-word-fan, one can't go NW from the first letter of a row can one? Or am I being more dense than usual??? Probably!
Hi devadolly.
I think x-word-fan meant the 7th letter. Good puzzle.
It could be that x_word_fan meant the first letter of the "essential".
OMG!
Not quite the usual weekly thread!
Not surprisingly, the regulars have stayed away :-(
Thanks spreadman, I was being dense as per! All done but that 6a, despite hobnailed clue I just cannot track it down.
Think we're all scared of getting chewed out for not spilling the beans Mickey666!
Hi Devadolly!

6 across is given only a singular ending -ium in my edition (1998) of the BRB.
