Where is everybody? Posting somewhere else? What an intricate construction. I have been delighted by the subtlety of this and now have a full and functioning grid but I am wondering how it fulfilled all the stages expressed in the preamble. Tea Leaves has done it again - thank you!

Great crossword and very good fun although there are still aspects of the phrasing of the instructions which slightly trouble me. As cartes blanches go I thought this was one of the best - although Shackleton's Hemingway one from last year sets the standard for me.
magichour - I completely agree with and support your final paragraph
The weekend flew by without much opportunity for this one, and I simply bounced off it with brief attempts until today when it became a steady solve. The penny eventually dropped with respect to the clashes - a neat little bit of lateral thinking imposed by TL. I think there may be several (genuine) possibilities for the below the grid entry (which if I'm right simply has to be below the grid), not least because I haven't seen anything appropriate in treating the grid as a wordsearch, Just as well, in the absence of any further coin dropping, to accept the option of not bothering. I'll be annoyed on solution day if it turns out to be really clever.
My thoughts were that "thematic appearance" meant doing the same thing to the setter as to all the other grid entries - in which case, I have to say I can see only one option.
But then I hadn't fully understood the "cryptic interpretation" until a little bird explained it to me, so I may well have missed something!
I finally managed to have some time with this.

Others have indicated similarly, but is no-one concerned that it is possible to 'complete' this puzzle without solving over half the clues?
In retrospect, yes, but in practice most will have needed to solve many more than that to achieve the necessary highlighting with confidence.
Highlighting?!
