President of the European Commission is former Portuguese Prime Minister, Jose Manuel Barosso.

I don't think the answer to this question is Barosso.  Photos don't look like him. Don't know who it is yet.  Haven't got answer to Q56 the African president either. 

Just have to plod on a bit more!

its is not Barosso.It is not a modern picture.It is probably take at the beginning of the last century.Possibly french as most european countries do not have presidents.

President of the European Parliament is Josep Borrell Fontelles

Luxembourg currently has the presidency of the Council of Ministers.  The UK takes it over in June for six months. 

But as it is not a modern picture, all of this is probably no help to you!  Sorry.

Hi, I'm just curious. What was the clue?

Hi sleuth, it's a picture clue of a man who served as president of a european nation, which has now apparently changed its name.  They want the name of the nation as it was when he was president.

Don't have a clue myself!!

Thanks. I was thinking he looked sort of German but guess not with that clue. The clue does limit it somewhat.
