I remember posting once before about the perils of the self service tills. Now Antony Worrall Thompson has been arrested for shop lifting after he failed to scan cheese and wine in Tesco.

He dodged the scanners on 5 seperate occasions, he must feel so stupid. But I can sympathise with the initial temptation. Anyone else?

i have no sympathy with any shoplifter, they are thieves, no more no less
I heard his pubs were struggling, but this.
He had to close some of his businesses due to going into administration - I have been really skint, I've never nicked any cheese (apparently the most nicked item).
Give him a break, it must have been an aberation and Jay will kill him
Some poor people actually steal food for their families.

Trust this little creep to nick cheese and wine!
Sibton - how can it be an aberration, he was caught on his sixth go at it.
He has fingers in lots of pies (pardon the pun).... column in the Sunday Express, TV appearances etc so he can hardly be on the breadline. Don't like to judge as I don't know all the facts. He is apparently seeking medical help.
I don`t know how tesco`s self service tills work but at Sainsbury`s they are very sensitive and nag you if you put something on them that you haven`t scanned. He must have put some thought into his methods and placed them on the ground. I don`t have any sympathy but I do admire him for apologising, admitting he was wrong and agreeing that he needs help. At least he confronted the issue and didn`t deny it.
How the heck did he get through that scanner 5 times and not get caught. Every time I go through it shouts at me in a very loud voice.
Sorry sher, i am biased, I like him.
but a good question would be "What on earth would you steal from Tesco?"
Hi Sibton - I can take him or live him but it must have taken some thought to do this six times. I can't use a self-service till honestly without it shouting at me (and me at it) or beeping or needing assistance.
He confronted the issue after he was caught.

What a brave little man!
Would have been better to confront it before he got caught/started doing it, bit late being all big about it when it's all out in the open.
Agree Sibton, if I was going to steal what on earth would I go to Tesco for?
I nearly did this in Morrison's, just the other day.

Scanned and paid for all my items and then realised I had left a Kit-Kat in the basket. For a split second I toyed with the idea of bagging it and doing one... I scanned it and paid again.
I refused o use the scanners in sainsburys for a long time as I thought jobs would be lost but one of the staff persuaded me on the grounds that she had been part time and now is full time assisting people using the scanner
He did not dodge the scanners - he tried to.
Did you believe that sibton? Bet she was the manager who got rid of all the staff!
No messi, still won't use scanners, I like the friendly women on the tills
...I like them as well.
