Can't make up my mind if it should be commence or commerce? Any advice much appreciated.

Commence I think ( Commerce with N for R)
Commence = to open things up i.e. get the ball rolling etc.

Swap the N for an R (knight for rook in chess notation) and you get commerce i.e. trade.
