16 A. Old Morrises perhaps proceed carefully in games (9)
bu?l?o?es
I came up with 'bullnoses', which gave me the N in 17 D.

Sorry, vallaw - forgot to thank you for 'pard'.
17d NAM - international car registration for Namibia

Bronowski made 'The Ascent of Man' so put 'man' upwards (it is a down clue)
I think it's "nam" (Namibia) - Bronowski wrote The Ascent of Man.
Question Author
Thanks for 'Nam'- yes, 17 D is a down clue.
Question Author
As I,with help on two clues, have completed the grid, I am now intrigued about the other aspects of this puzzle. The title is Dancing Girl. 17 shaded squares give the probable real name(2 words) of a character and his destination. Unless ABers have done this puzzle, they won't be able to give me any suggestions for the character and destination - but I'm hoping they can help me make something out of SMUOMSHEDEFETAIL.

A big thank you to Bella B - have now totally finished my first ever Inquisitor.
Hi Nical
Are you totally sure of your highlighted 17 letters? I'm struggling with the name too, but I have an "A" instead of one of your Es and I think you've left out an "R". I'd love to know if I'm struggling with the right anagrams!
Can anyone explain why 24 down: Californian cat - meagre fellow is pard?
Thanks in advance
Answer given correctly elsewhere as BARF
Thank you stymied
I was thinking of pets not sick!
Have a good Bank Holiday
Hi Nical,

Think there is only one "a" in the highlighted letters. I made a mistake with Georgia in one clue......the answer is the abbreviation for the country not the state. Hope that makes sense?

Still none the wiser, though, as to the theme or anagram, so any boot in the correct direction much appreciated?!
Sorry, my last post should have been to Indy-trier! :-)

Although I don't mind who answers! :-)
Thanks Voulez-vous
I was torn but decided on the version ending in "A" as this word is a Hindu holiday. I am so good at misleading myself!!
NAM - remember 'The Ascent of Man'?
Thanks again Voulez-vous. Have now completed everything after waking up this morning with a song playing in my head and, as a result, looking at this puzzle in a new way! How does a brain do that?!
