La manche means "the sleeve" and La Manche is what the French call the English Channel.
As Thecorbyloon says. The imaginative (unlike the French) could see a puffed sleeve in an overhead projection of the English Channel.
British call it the English Channel.
French call it The Channel, as they foolishly don't ascribe superiority to the English.
