The abbreviation for Northamptonshire is Northants.

I had always wondered about Hampshire & its abbreviation, Hants.

Now my suspicions are confirmed. The full name for Hampshire is actually Southamptonshire. I wonder when this longer name was last used for the county?

The name "Hampshire" was introduced in 1959, replacing "County of Southampton" as the official name of the county. "Southamptonshire" had been an alternative, though unofficial according to some internet sources.
