years ago,my mum would say "Don"t just stand there "like Piffin on a Mountain",get a move on"! Who was this Piffin,or was it Piffy ?

or do you have another version,where you come from ?

we used to say, piffy on a rock bun, which meant a waste of time lol
Never heard the phrase, but I have to say that my immediate thought on reading it was that your mother may have seen the old-fashioned letter 's', which looked very like an 'f'. That would have meant piffin was an action, not a name!
(Just a joke; I'm sure she was far too much of a lady to have done any such thing.)

You could well be on the right track there,Quizmonster - a corruption of
Piffing - hmm! - I thought one ABer may have recalled a Mountaineer
of yore - named Piffin,or Piffy - if not,I will favour your explanation !
I havent heard of it, its a northern slang, here is another version of it.
