The original was "Laugh? I thought I should have died", which dates back to the late 19th century. Russell Davies, writing a review in the New Statesman in 1977, referred to "Laugh? I nearly bought my own beer" and "Laugh? I nearly fell off the wife", both of which date back to the 1920s.
I imagine your version is just a variant of the middle one of the three above.
No, no, no, no, no Quizmonster! It actually originated one day from a Scotsman who was heard babbling it until his wife woke him to say that he'd been talking in his sleep again!
