What's the meaning of "in any other light than" in the following sentences?

With the existing colonies or dependencies of any European power we have not interfered and shall not interfere. But with the governments who have declared their independence and maintained it, and whose independence we have...acknowledged, we could not view any interposition for the purpose of oppressing them, or controlling in any other manner their destiny, by any European power in any other light than as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.

It means that the United States would interpret any interference in the affairs of those "governments who have declared their independence and maintained it, and whose independence we have...acknowledged," as being as indication that the interferers are not friends of the US. Basically "don't mess with the people who are in my gang", but its a more "diplomatic" way of saying it

it just means that there is no other
way to view them, indeed the words
could read 'in any other way' and
the meaning would be the same.
the word light is used in the same
way as 'seeing the light' as seeing
the truth or 'illuminating' the facts
