Blue has long been the colour associated with constancy and loyalty. An early reference was in the 17th century when someone wrote: "True blue will never stain."

It has often been chosen as a representative colour by particular groups, religious or political. The Whigs and the Scottish Covenanters chose blue to distinguish themselves from opposing parties/sects and - in modern politics - it is the colour associated with the Conservative Party.

It also stems from royalty - being of blue blood
