Health Assessment

A new agency my boyfriend is with asked him to fill out a health assessment which was very detailed and seemed very unrelated to his job. They wanted details of any operations he had ever had, any food poisoning, any mental health issues...a whole long list of things, most of which woul have no impact on his ability to work.

He filled it in as he didn't mind them knowing all that but I just wondered if someone would be within their rights to refuse should they wish to? Surely they only need to know about present health problems?

I don't know the 'correct' answer but have found that this is a pretty standard questionaire for a lot of jobs these days. I always fill them in regardless of whether they are relevant or not.

I guess that the only people who would refuse to answer the questions would be the ones with something to hide.
There are good reasons why a permanent employer does this - the coverage of a decent sickness payment scheme means an employer wants to know what it is potentially letting itself in for.
This doesn't apply to an agency necessarily unless it is offering a sick pay scheme.
