Guessing here but could he mean serving God?
could he have been saying, that if you have the desire and the will, you can succeed at anything you want to. that god will guide you to your greatness.

This is a quote from a sermon (to a congregation), not from a civil rights march etc .... simply it means -

true greatness is related to loving and serving others ..... Jesus served, eg he washed the feet of His disciples.
