...where it stops, nobody knows! where does this come from? somebody said it in the office this morning and now we're all trying to figure out where it comes from. Does anyone know? It seems that all of us - those of us in our 20's, 30's and 40's have heard it, but can't think where.

Apparently, it was used on a radio show called "Major Bowes Original Amateur Hour" from 1934-1948 which featured a wheel of fortune type game.

It also appears to be a standard phrase used by American funfair game runners back in the 1930s.
The kids TV prog Playbus used to say "where does it stop, what's the sign on the lolipop"?
also in the lyrics of Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band

I would think that the saying refers to a roulette wheel going "round and round".
Lovejoy also used it when he was throwing a long leather boot when he was doing something like a charity auction - if you can understand my rambling!
I like the roulette theory, never thought of that. But a another less clever explanation could be that round and round... is like a circle and a circle has no beginning and no end. I do love the roulette answer though!
