Why are you a 'gooseberry' of you find yourself alone with a couple? Why not a date? - that would be more appropriate.

You're not A gooseberry, siggy, you PLAY gooseberry - sorry to be a pedant. The only answer I can find to this is that the unwelcome third partyh spends their time picking goosberries while the lovers get on with their hot date. Not very convincing though. Maybe other users have some theories???
