I would say 'I fell asleep' although I have heard others express it as 'I felt asleep', and 'I fell to sleep'. What expression do you use?

'I fell asleep' is correct. 'I felt asleep' would mean 'I felt as though I was sleeping'. 'I fell to sleep' is more usually 'I fell into a sleep'.
I fell asleep
'Fall to...', In the sense of 'began to', was often used in the past in situations such as "The hungry travellers fell to eating" or "The men fell to arguing over the spoils."
The writer, George Eliot, certainly used the phrase 'fall to sleep' in a publication of the 1870s, but that construction is rather archaic now.
i expect the mishearing of 'i felt asleep' is just 'i fell to sleep' but its an accent shortening thing as in 'i fell ter sleep' or
'i fell t' sleep'
'I felt asleep' is along the same lines as writing 'could of' because it sounds like 'could've' (a contraction of 'could have') when spoken. Avoid using both.
