Why is it always 'sticks' of furniture?

When people refer to not having much furniture, they always refer to them as 'sticks' of furniture.

Beyond the obvious of pre-mediaeval times, furniture might have been made from sticks - (bit rickety I'd have thought!), why are they called such?

The use of 'sticks' here is just to emphasise the 'poverty' or meagreness of the furniture owned...ie the suggestion is that not just the quantity of furniture is slim but so, too, is the quality. As you say, there is more than a hint of ricketiness!
