Here's what the American Merriam-Webster dictionary has to say:
Etymology: French � propos, literally, to the purpose.
Date: 1668
I forgot to mention that nowadays, in English, it's usually spelt as one word, apropos.
These days it's used to say 'relating to'... for example if in a conversation someone says "a propos nothing" it means, not relating to anything we've been talking about.
