The earliest recorded use of the idea of pigs flying being an example of the clearly impossible dates back to the early 1600s. Oddly enough, it referred to them flying tail-first! Since then, it has appeared in various forms. Here's one from Lewis Carroll in the mid-19th century...

"I've a right to think," said Alice sharply..."Just about as much right," said the Duchess, "as pigs have to fly."
