Where does the expression 'as American as apple pie' come from. Surely apple pie has been common in many countries for many years?

Einstein: Could you possibly be more bitter? I agree with an earlier post on this site re: the rudeness of people here! Why is there so little tolerance for other people? Is it because the site is so full of Scottish males (as you all point out repeatedly)? I don't know as I have met very few, just an observation!
I think the expression has something to do with the legend of Jonny Appleseed who went around from pioneer farm to pioneer farm planting apple trees in return for food and lodgings
