Over the past 3 years I've lost over 3.5 stone, and my rings are almost falling off my fingers, which I didn't expect. I've bought those clip on things that you put onto the rings to try and keep them on, but they are still loose. Has anyone ever had to have theirs made smaller?I didn't really want to mess with them  but don't think Ive much choice,

No I bought new ones!

and wear the originals on a necklace

Yes, I've had rings made smaller.  It obviously can't be done with eternity rings which have gemstones all the way around, but plain wedding rings or engagement rings with stones just at the top can be altered successfully.

Yes I did, many noons ago.  I can't remember the cost the jeweller charged but I do remember being happy with the result.

No, I have done the opposite and had mine made larger, due to bigger knuckles. Used a small local jeweller who did a excellent job.

Do ask around for quotes and recommendations.

By the way, smow, those clip on things tend to wear the metal of the ring away.  They're not a good idea long term.

Modern jewllers have a device that uses pressure to make it smaller so they don't have to cut it.

One might have thought layers of some coating on the inside, of an appropriate material, would reduce the radius without major metalwork trauma. Do they not try that ?

Please please don't be offended Smowball by my comments.  I don't know the circumstances behind your weight loss so I can only speak of my own experience.  15 years ago I was in exactly your position after steadily dieting for a long time.  I found those clips not only damage the rings but they "catch" in things.  So I had my rings made smaller but despite all my best intentions after a couple of years I gradually put the pounds back on.  I then had to have them made larger again.   Redhelens idea is a good one and I wish I'd thought of it.

TBH it was an easy decision for me to do that - because I didn't really like the engagement ring or the wedding ring.

No offence taken by any comments, and thanks guys for all the answers x

My wife has dropped three ring sizes after chemo, and she has had her wedding ring re-sized, and it's fine now.

Find a reputable jeweller who will be able to perform this simple task for you.

They have a ring "squasher" that reduces the diameter but does not remove any material, not sure what it's called but err indoors had hers done. Ask at a local big jeweller they'll have one.

I never had an engagement ring and rarely wore my wedding ring because of allergy reaction.  I never bothered to replace it.  So I am ringless and people assume I'm divorced or widowed or just an old spinster.

thats because of your poface lottie - 🤣

Yep!  Actually, I just wanted to keep people guessing.  Rings label you.  And I'll get my own back on you one day when you least expect it.  With such friends, who needs enemies!! 😉

Dear Smowball, Congrats on the weight loss!

I come from 4 generations of clock makers and jewelers, started working for family at age 10! yes, also, I have had rings sized. The BEST idea is to get your rings sized right away to keep from loosing them. if you can find a jewelry store front, with a Bench Jeweler in the store you could drop them off and come back in a few hours for your rings. They adjust and fix any worn prongs, so you don't loose precious stones, too.  The funny thing is that when you have a gold ring made smaller, a section of gold band is cut out, and solder the ring together again. the Jeweler keeps the gold he's removed. When a person needs a ring bigger the jeweler adds from his own gold and solders back together. But sizing a ring, up or down, are often the same price, i always thought that was funky.
