The only reference to "digging out blind" on the Google search engine is the same question posted by you on another website. This seems to indicate that the phrase is not in common use; but is probably unique to the book, film etc where you heard or read it. Incidentally, what on earth does the phrase mean?

we use the phrase digging out blind as a term of how hard we are working . I assume this is a phrase unique to the armed forces , like saying shrapnel when we mean small change coins .
