Phoned insurance company today. Spoke to very sympathetic lady. So helpful.
Asked me roughly what was the value of the food that was lost. I said about £200. Oh dear how upsetting for you she said. Are you aware you have a £250 excess on your policy?
Not a lot I can do about that now!

you need to keep more expensive food in the freezer for moments like these!

Tell her you forgot to mention the three-litre tub of Caspian caviar.
Always a tough call deciding on your excess - a dilemma really.

As you say, not much to be done.

When talking to her I felt if I had said £500 she would have okay end it, but who in their right mind would have that much food in a freezer.
I found it really upsetting as I had built up my freezer over a long time, with things I had created, as well as left overs from special meals, but joints, chops, steaks, salmon, prawns and some thing new we had discovered. Battered scallops lots of them in a bag. They were beautiful.
But I have made a start, brought lots back from France, replaced the scallops today, and a load of other stuff. It will take a while but I will get there.
Just tell them you'd forgotten about the takeaway meals which you'd ordered but then decided not to eat straight away, so that they ended up in the freezer.

Now, let's see, they must have included a kebab, a curry, . . . .

I would say that a policy like that is not worth the paper it is written on!
I would struggle to fit £250 worth of food in my freezer.
Bloody hell, bad luck that Caran. Is the freezer part of your household insurance ?.
Question Author
Chris that is beyond belief, I don't think I could eat anything like that.
EDDIE51 the £250 excess applies to everything on the house / contents insurance.

I thought it would be, Caran.
I've only got a little 'tabletop' freezer (which actually sits on the floor). Its contents are usually half a dozen frozen ready meals (at, say, £2 each) and another half a dozen ready meals purchased as short-dated items from the chill cabinet in Asda (for, say, £1 each). So I probably don't need insurance!

Anyway, since I've not got a fridge, I need to maintain enough space in my freezer to chill a couple of cans of lager!
As you've had freezer door trouble before it may be worth getting one of those childproof locks on it for peace of mind when you're away.
Question Author
Naturally Chris you have to look after the lagers.
Only a couple, Chico?

Good man, Chris. Always good to see the correct priorities although Mrs av doesn't agree with mine

Mamya the strange thing is sometimes the door is very hard to open, I really have to tug at it. So next time we are away I hope I remember to gaffer tape it shut.

One out, one in, JD33 ;-)

Well I'll certainly be getting my priorities right tomorrow, Tony

(and, no, I won't be wearing lederhosen!)
Ohhhhh, I'm well jel, Chris.
Hope they have those Bavarian type serving wenches ;-)
I find that too Caran, especially after just shutting it and realising I need to check something else. I think there are times freezers suck.
I'm wondering how one gets a lagersicle out of the distorted/split can.
At least you may replace the stuff you lost. Everything in our freezer was home grown and in there for winter use. All the loganberries, Jostaberries, Raspberries. Black currants, Redcurrants, Strawberries turned to mush. We think that the cat who sleeps on top of the freezer somehow managed to knock the plug out.
Would not have been able to claim anyway as home grown stuff like that has no value as we did not buy it.
