Why do we abbreviate the name William to Wm, and why don't we do it with any other name?

(Although, I have seen Margaret written as Mgt.)

Ummm… I've often seen John abbreviated Jno. (as well as others)

Thanks for that ABerrant, I had no idea so many names were abbreviated.

When I saw Geo for George though, I know I have seen that before on signage for shops/businesses.

So there is an abreviation for my name - never heard of it before, but a welsh friend does shorten my name to that!


One missing from that list is Dot - Dorothy

Dot is not really an abbreviation, more a diminutive. Years ago you would frequently see Chas. and Thos. but not these days.
