The abandonment of slavery in the United States was a gradual process, leading to final abolition in 1863.
Prior to that date, a number of northern States had denounced the practice. New York outlawed slavery in 1777, one of the first acts of its Governors, a full ten years before joining The Union.
Similarly, Masachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Ohio had all legally baned the practice of owning slaves in 1804.
