till (n.) "cashbox," mid-15c., from Anglo-French tylle "compartment,"
The 'Till' is actually the drawer in a cash register and the term is now applied generally.
Cos you have to wait unTIL oaps fumble with their purses (I am an oap fumbler!!)
Yep, think its the shelf in the money compartment/drawer where you store the cash/cheques.
Why shouldn't it be?
perhaps derived from the word tally ( to tally or add up)

till 3 (tl)

1. A drawer, small chest, or compartment for money, as in a store.
2. A supply of money; a purse.
[Middle English tille.]
