I remember being told at school that it can mean the opposite in some countries/cultures
Certainly in Bulgaria it's the opposite.
1. Nods
2. Shakes
No - some of the Indian subcultures shake their head for No - it's certainly not the same all over the world. Same with hand gestures - some we do are obscene in other parts of the world.
Not in Albania
I seem to remember from holidays in Greece that nodding means No .....

Yes indeed, in India they do that ambiguous circular motion. Sought of weighing their response up before deciding which way they sit.
