KS3 Sats: what do the results mean?

My son came home to say he "got 90 in science,which is a 6". Can anyone clarify what this means? Neither of us is sure - My guess is that it's pretty average, given the amount of revision...

So 90 is bang in the middle. This is about, or slightly above average nationally and the measure of success depends on the KS2 result. Progress from a good level 5 to an average level 6 over 3 years would be worse than progress from an average level 4.
