said something about someone and then realised that the person you were talking about MAY have overheard you and been upset. I did this yesterday. It wasnt a nasty comment, just an endearing funny thing about this person really and I realised he had walked in the room just as I finished the sentence and I dont know if he overheard me or not. He didnt seem upset but hes a naturally quiet person anyway. I would feel awful if I thought what I said upset him.
Has this happened to you

Yes, well their son did. I was at an auction once and went to get a drink from the cafe. The woman serving, about 40 ish, was a real misery. Tried to make conversation but she was having none of it. On the way out, I stopped to talk to a teenage boy who I vaguely knew by sight and said to him not to hold his breath if he wanted a friendly word out of her. "thats my mum" he said. He was being serious. I nearly died.

I once went to a party out of town. A taxi took me there but wouldn't come back (it was a rough pit village). I ended up asking complete strangers if they were heading my way until I found a husband and wife who were, and kindly offered me a lift. At the time I had a very good friend called Tracy who was having an affair with a married man. During the lift home I asked the man where he worked and he named a factory. I said that my friend Tracy worked there, and did he know her? There was a frosty silence in the car and the wife suddenly decided that they were no longer going near my house and dropped me in the middle of nowhere.
It turned out that he was the married man in question.
Only you, mrs_o, only you ;)

Very funny Mrs O. Hope you got home ok.
It reminds me of the time we were looking at moving house and I was in the Estate Agents and she showed me some on a new build estate and I straight away said , Oh no I dont fancy living up there, I dont like new estates to which she replied indignantly, " I live up there ". I mumbled some escuse and never went back to that agency.
We used to live in what was/is considered a posh part of the village.
The older alba son went to a friend's birthday party (5 years of age).
The mother asked me where we lived, told her, she said 'oh, the not-so-nice council estate' I asked where she stayed, she told me, it's a new housing estate and considered posh. I replied 'oh, that even worse full of drug-addict estate'

Not exactly what you were looking for TOH, but I did feel good.
