When someone changes the subject to something completely unrelated, some people say "what does that have to do with the price of eggs' and some say 'price of fish' which is right?
Have the 'price of fish' people got confused with 'thats a different kettle of fish' or do they both stand alone as phrases regarding changes of subject?

I have heard 'what's that got to do with the price of bacon?'

I have always assumed the 'price of bacon' stood for a real life issue (ie its important how much you are paying for bacon compared to said unrelated issue) whereas what the other person was talking about was not important.

hope that helps - maybe someone else can explain more clearly...

If you do a Google search on the phrase "what's that got to do with the price of", you'll find lots of references. As  a matter of interest, the opening half dozen complete it with coffee, cheese, fish, rice and eggs! In other words, it can be virtually anything the speaker decides it is to be.

So it doesn't matter what you say? It's a bit of a silly saying isn't it because unless you are actually talking about the price of something, it's every bit as random as the subject the conversation has been changed to.
I suppose, as Miss_chase suggests above, that the prices of basic foodstuffs are real and important to everyone in their daily lives. Hence, the phrase is used to suggest that the topic under discussion is really irrelevant - or at least of minor importance - when compared with the harsh realities of life in the raw.
