One evening last week on tv Jon Snow returned to Haiti for his first visit since the earthquake and was amazed that 'nothing has changed apart from the proliferation of plastic sheeting' under which everyone was living. His main focus for the dreadful conditions was the fact that the interational aid money 2billion had not been released and was languishing somewhere offshore,
a hapless UN rep. made all sorts of excuses for this. Women were giving birth under the plastic and the men were drinking rum and playing dominoes. Oxfam labourers (Haitians?)were digging latrines. On the same evening a programme re-constructed a west country Edwardian farm, it was astonishing to see how much work and danger by a small group of men, went into producing lime to put on the fields to reduce the acidity of the soil. I have been wondering all week, what would have happened if an earthquake had hit Dorset then.
