What's the diff between an iPod and an iPod player ?

My niece apparently would like an iPod player to use both at uni & at home, as opposed to an iPod (which she's already got).
I don't know what she's talking about, can someone enlighten me / point me in the right direction ?

I think she might be talking about a Docking Station. It's like a speaker into which you sit thr ipod and you can listen to it like a stereo.

Ah ok. I'll double check that with her mum as she told me that at the same time as giving me an idea for a "big" pressie for my other niece. Thanks.
