Its the black country slang for 'girl', where does it come from?

There was once a newspaper report that a local council had approved a sum of money "for the provision of new wenches for the park, as the present old ones are in a rather dilapidated condition."

A wench is a girl or young women. The word was mainly used for barmaids, back when there were coaching inns ect...it is not meant to be a bad word...
