My brother has received a really expensive phone bill from BT, apparently him and his wife have been receiving them since March but have never thought to check their itemised phone bill!!!!!! Anyway, this quarter they have gone through it and discovered that a high premium number (09017675092) is showing as been called at different times during the day, times when there was nobody in the house so they are sure it isn't the kids.. They have called BT who have barred the line calling any premium numbers & they have said that they are investigating. Does anybody know anything about this, I vaguely remember something on Watchdog but it was with TalkTalk. Is there anything they can do?

I entered the number on the phonepayplus website and it gave me this info

I hope it is of some help to you and your brother.
oops,I don't think the link worked. If you go to the phonepayplus website and enter the phone number in section that says "check a premium rate number on your phone bill" ,it gives you the info they have on that 0901 number and the company it is registered to.

ir says it is a telephone emailer service and 20p a minute, I expected it to be one of those 1 a MINUTE COMPETITION LINES. what is an emailer service? (just being nosy)

Thanks for your help. What is a emailer service?
ooo, I wonder if it is like the call back service on your mobile when you enter a competition and you get charged for the confirmation email, and then sometimes you subscribe to email alerts, my son did one once for the premiership resylts and it was 50p each time he got a results update
Have you got an Amstrad email phone or something similar that checks your email through dial up several times a day?

Question Author
do you think he should contact the company? Not sure where he stands because there is nobody in the house to call any premium numbers
Question Author
Fay, I will check with my brother but do you think now he has barred any premium lines being dialled then this should stop happening?
It should do - but if your brother has any contract with Amstrad or Sky+ that allows the service provided these calls can be made, he may be billed some extra monthly fee.

09017675091 is definitely an Amstrad emailer number - my guess is it is that.

I've just spoken to him, he has got a Amstrad email phone but he has not contract it was just something he bought off ebay and plugged in.. Anybody know if there is anything he can do?
Unplug the blasted thing - and leave it unplugged.

As soon as he plugs it in it will dial that number - it is how it fetches any emails he has.

These phones sold very cheap when new - because Amstrad makes their money from the calls.
he will probably be being billed the use of the email service then

Thanks everyone, the phone is now unplugged and in the garage, its a shame he never did anything 10 months ago!!
i got caught the same way several years ago, what a con as you cant just use all the other things that are on the phone because as soon as its plugged in it will make at least one call a day to see if any emails have been sent.

Hi, did you get an outcome to this as it has happened with my mother in law and the same number!
Just in case anyone is still wondering and following this link, it is correct that this number ifs the dial back service to pick up emails on an Amstrad Emailer phone.

I made the mistake of buying one for my 84 year young mummy-in-law as a substitute for a laptop that she could not manage. This was years ago and I have only just realised what was generating these premium calls.

Ho hum, lesson learnt, damn thing discarded now.
