Cooking Mushrooms

I'd like some suggestions on a simple method of cooking standard sized mushrooms.

I don't really want a recipe as such as I'd like to cook them alone with at most, perhaps a little seasoning added.

At the moment, I slice them thinly and microwave them with some butter and some mixed herbs for around a minute.

Ideally, I'm looking for some other method of cooking that's almost as simple.

Many thanks.

If you are using your oven for other things then you can cook the mushrooms at the same time saving electricity.
They can be left whole and wrapped in baking foil with a little oil or butter over the top. Will take about 25 to 30 minutes to cook.
Why not fry them in some butter and seasoning. You can add different things in this method i.e onions or you could use garlic butter.

The way I do garlic butter is use a big blob of butter and cruch 1-2 garlic cloves in and a good sprinkle of dried parsley. I make quite a bit and keep it in the fridge using only what I need!
bit of butter in a pan, pop mushrooms in hey presto

Thanks all.

I'd thought of frying them but what's the best way to do it? Should I slice them or cut them into chunks? How long do I fry them for?

Sorry if I sound a bit naive!
You can slice them if you like but personally I don't iike the texture of fried slice mushrooms, I usually just cut button mushrooms into quarters and fry them.
You cut them how you like, I slice them thick. If you cook them slowly they will go a bit soggy but if you cook them on high, they will brown especially with butter!

When you buy mushrooms though, if you buy the bif ones with a lot of dark under it they will go a bit grey/black when you cook them, but its ok, tastes nice too!
Cut them into quarters (slices if they're very big) and put them in a frying pan or non stick saucepan with a knob of butter, a crushed clove of garlic and a splash of lemon juice!

Gorgeous! (might have to do some myself tonight now!
Knob of butter -heat til foaming but not smoking.....a fat clove of crushed garlic....then the mushrooms.Move them around in the pan til the aroma of garlic&mushrooms become unbearably yummy(!) Mound on a slice of hot buttered toast. PS always make more than you think you need-the mushrooms will shrink!

Thank you all once again. Frying sounds really yummy!
I personally LOVE the mushrooms from the local chinese takeaway.I've tried re-creating them at home but I have such a tiny kitchen!!!
( not much room)
I like mine just grilled on the george foreman with a bit of butter - not sliced just halved or quartered.

My hubby uses this recipe from"The complete crafty cook book" by Michael Barry .It's called country mushrooms.
Serves 4
4 large open mushrooms
125ml(4 fl oz) double cream, the thickest you can find.
4 tablespoons butter
4 teaspoons chopped parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper

Pull the stalks from the mushrooms and wipe the caps.Butter a dish large enough to hold all the mushrooms flat and arrange, black side up. Spoon 2 tablespoons of the cream onto each mushroom, top with a tablespoon of the butter and season well. Bake in a preheated oven 220c (425f) gas mark 7, for 15 mins.
Sprinkle with the parsley and pour over the pan juices.
Serve with thick crusty wholemeal bread and enjoy.
Delicious !!
Same theme as cook's but mix fresh breadcrumbs with a crushed clove of garlic and fresh chopped parsley and a little melted butter crumble some stilton cheese into the mixture and spoon into the caps .Bake 15 mins .If you don't like Stilton you can use cheddar.
My favourite is button mushrooms fried in butter and garlic and a good dollop of Dolcelatte cheese melted in ..scrummy
