does anyone like me believe you block out bad memories from your mind, only i have forgotten so many of the things from when i was a young girl, or is it just a case of having a bad memory?

NO you mind can blosk things out - my dad once explained something to me - your mind has little draws and sometime you lock memories in them and they unlock themselves at some point in the future...if you know what i mean. Its called selective amnesia or something i'm sure....hmmmm....esp if they are unpleasent memories
Yes, you can definitely block out bad memories from your past, its just your mind's way of coping with it. I've heard about it happening to people caught out in wars or highly traumatic situations.

I don't know if its healthy or not ... definitely a survival instinct though.

thats very interesting thanks nannon
The mind does block bad memeories otherwise a lot of us would go crackers, my dad used to drink a lot, and I mean a lot, he insulted my mum, and could be really horrible when drunk but all the real memories of him are good ones, another instance my son was in a real bad accident, buried under a ton and a half of clay, his mouth, nose and ears were full of it, he almost died but he has now got over this and although it is in the back of the mind, it isn't forever on his mind, we also look back on our childhood and all we remember of the schoolholidays is playing out in the sun, the trees were bigger, the grass was greener, the sweets were better etc, were they really that good ?
we like to remember what we want to remember.
So the good memories remains with us and the bad ones that we would rather forget only pop up when we are feeling low!
The brain is so complex and yet so clever.
friutsalad , today it may be you forgot not to eat toffees !!!
