I have posted on here before with regards to this pain I get under my ribs. Everything points towards stitch but I don't understand, it is so painful it's crippling , not like the stitch I remember getting as a wee one. Not only that but I never used to get it when I was a fat unfit lump, now I am at my peak in terms of health and fitness and it's really holding me back. Is there much point in going to see the doc? Really can't be bothered to waste my time being told the usually "you need to rest" or there isn't really anything we can do - not really the best answers as I am a personal trainer.

Thanks

Is it a general pain around your abdomen or a specific stabbing sensation. If it is the latter where exactly does it hurt, left, right, sides.etc?

Hellop, thank you for your response - No, not a stabbing pain it is a constant pain, really sharp. They way I describe it to my running partner is, if you imagine squeezing a sponge really tight, thats what it feels like is happening to what ever is under my ribs on the right. When I say under I mean if I was lying down it would be beneath my ribs. If I stop running it slowly fades and then will more than likely return later in the run. If I keep running, the pain gets worse and worse until I literally cannot take another step.

Thanks

It could be you are suffering muscle spasms in that area, but it may be referred pain. This is when you have a problem in one area of your body but feel the pain in another. For example, pain between the shoulder blades is often a symptom of Gall Stones which occur towards the right side of the body. I would suggest you see your GP, just to put your mind at rest, and yes, they will probably say its cramp, don't worry, but it is better to get these things checked out.

My friend experienced the exact same thing and sought advice through her G.P who got her a referral to the hospital. She had an Ultra-sound scan and it revealed she had Gallstones. She had Keyhole surgery with an overnight stay and since her op she is pain free again. Be aware of your diet as certain foods really do bring on quite severe attacks. If it turns out that this is your problem then some dietary changes after surgery may also be required-depending on the type of gallstones found.
