I had mine done a few years ago and had no problems atall, though obviously there is always a risk. I had it in for five years in all.

I really liked it and only took it out because I lost the bottom of it when I was out one night (the bottom unscrewed by accident) and by the time I had gotten home, I drunkenly forgot to replace it and woke up and the hole was virtually closed up!

So, if you do get it done here are two tips:
a) Always carry a spare bar in your purse / on you
b) Don't get into the habit of clicking it between your teeth because not only is it annoying to other people but it will wear the enamel down and damage your toothy pegs (my teeth are fine incidentally but I know many people who have chipped their teeth)

Oh and go to a reputable place. Obviously.
Hi, i was worried about this before i got mine done aswell!! I have had mine done for quite a few months now, and of course there is always a risk, but there is with any piercing.. as long as you go to a good place & look after it, clean it and the like then it should be fine :-)
if you want it done just go for it, the more you think about it the more you'll worry.
It didn't hurt having it done, but it was sore for a few days after, so be prepared not to be able to talk or eat properly. i couldn't eat properly for about 5 days.
make sure to clean it properly aswell, all i used was some mouth wash twice a day (make sure its not got any alcohol in it, and its not a strong one), and then with some warm salt water after everything i had minus water - just put a teaspoon of salt in a cup then add some warm water and swish it round in your mouth for a bit!
good luck! xx
ooh & here's a link to a question i posted!

I had no pain having mine done but I did chip a tooth when I bit on it whilst eating a Donner Kebab after a few beers, but that was with the longer bar before I had it replaced with the permanent bar.
i had mine done 9 years ago i was terrified i dont do needles but my mate had kindly told everyone who we worked with that we were getting it done so they all started taking bets that i wudnt go through with it coz ya see i dont do needles...so to save face i went lol!! i can honestly say i didnt feel a thing...my tongue was slightly swelled for a couple of days after and that was it.....so good luck!! i still have it in by the way.....making sure i get my moneys worth..lol
As with all piercings there is a risk - Ive had mine done for 6 years now.

As long as you look after it and get it done from a respectable piercer things should be ok.

when you have it done your tongue swells up to twice the original size so they put a large bar in to start with.

You must clean your mouth out after every meal, cigarette, drink etc (I used listerine) carry a small diluted bottle with you.

You are advised to only eat luke warm foods and soft foods for the first week.

and after a week some places ask you to go back to get the bar changed for a smaller one as most of the swelling will have gone down by then.

Be prepared for the ache the first few days - it dosn't hurt just uncomfortable. Its one of the best, fun piercings I have got.

oh yeah and it dosn't close up over night - I left mine out for over a week and it was ok. It will only close up that quick if you take it out before it has healed fully (12 weeks uauslly).

Hope this helps.
