Places of interest in the South of France

I am flying to St Tropez with a friend on 1 Sept and we are planning on travelling to various places within a couple of hours drive of St Tropez as we would like to see different areas.

Has anyone ever been here? Any tips on good places to visit? We were thinking Cannes, Monte Carlo and maybe Italy.

We are both 28 and interested in shopping, sites/historical places and local culture but our French isn't up to much.
