The proper way, in a pan of water, not using cups, bags, poacher pans or any other gadget?
It seems many people can't and Jamie Oliver says he couldn't poach an egg until he read Deliah's method

I love poached eggs and can't understand why some people find it difficult

Even my husband can poach an egg
I can, but prefer to use my poaching pods, why bother with the proper way.
I couldn’t poach an egg so bought the pouches on Amazon. No fuss, no mess, no making a whirlpool or using vinegar. They’re great.

It really is no bother, rowan.

Hurrah for husbands, Helen! But can you poach an egg?
Question Author
I don't make a whirlpool or use vinegar. Just simmering water with a bit of salt.
I’ve wasted loads of eggs in the past using various ‘foolproof’ methods. No more.
My Welsh gran's method: Small saucepan of water. Bring to boil and lower gas to simmer. Whirl the water with spoon and create a vortex. Drop of vinegar. Carefully crack the egg and lower gently into the swirling, simmering water. Give two minutes to cook. Remove egg with a strainer or ladle with holes and serve. Bit of pepper. Delish.
Of course, boiling water, reduced to a simmer, No lemon juice, vinegar or vortex needed.
Crack in fresh egg. Put a lid on and turn off the heat perfect eggs every time
isn't that just a boiled egg without the shell ?

I can understand how some people can't do it - I can't make good gravy, I've followed recipes, had friends show me, given up.
Yes. Super fresh eggs are the key. Thankfully, the farmer's wife over the road keeps me supplied with fresh eggs.
What's a poached egg? One that's been nicked? Fried eggs every time! Every time, I say!!!

Doyou like the edges frilly and crispy, 10C?
A large shallow pan of simmering water for 4 at a time.

No gimmicks for me now, although I have tried them all in the past but way to much washing up witb cups and gizmos.
The key is the freshness of the eggs. We buy from the farm down the road from us and they are no more than 24 hours old, rubbish for hard boiled eggs as the shells won't come off that fresh, but amazing for poached. Simmering water with a dash of vinegar in, no vortex, just pop them in and wait around 3 mins or until they are done to your liking. I hate overly running yolks so leave mine in a bit longer.
I can...used to do them often when I worked.
But I don't...too much exposed soft white for my taste.
Pasta I trim off all the white and the dogs get it.
I can - my favourite way to eat eggs (especially on crushed avocado on sourdough) but they take ages. I also use Delia's method as a fail-safe one; but I've managed them other ways. Some spectacular erratic results with whirlpool methods!! :)

I wonder if it is possible to poach a separated egg yolk? Must be. Then make meringue with the whites
Question Author
I don't know why yours takes ages, jourdain, it should only take a few minutes
