Can a "suspect" be arrested?
The police released the two men they arrested earlier. Arrested and charged are two very different things
I suspect strictly speaking he’s a suspect until he’s convicted…. but I don’t know.
this case has mystified me, how can someone get into a situation where they knife a 9 year old kid?
He's a suspect until released with no further action or the end of any trial.

Mental illness?
Being arrested does not mean someone is guilty.

If they weren't allowed to arrest based only upon suspicion, a lot of guilty folk would be free a great deal longer than they should be.
// Mental illness? //

Until the police provide a motive, there is no way to tell.
>>> Can a "suspect" be arrested?

The standard wording used by the police in this country when arresting someone is "I am arresting you on suspicion of . . . ".

It's irrelevant as to whether or not the police officer has just witnessed that person gunning down a dozen people or driving erratically while swigging from a bottle of vodka. An arrest is always made solely "on suspicion of . . .".

So everyone who is arrested here is always a 'suspect', irrespective of the strength of any evidence against them.
OK, thanks, Buenchico. I thought that if a person was suspected of committing a crime they were considered to be a "person of interest" and taken in for further questioning and held for a defined period of time pending further investigations.
sanmac, you have just defined 'arrested'

If a suspect wasn't arrested he could be invited to accompany an officer to the nick. He's not obliged to go.
But if he refused, he could be arrested, sandy
“Can a suspect be arrested”

What are you suggesting as an alternative?
Perhaps I'm hovering over the distinction between "arrested" and "charged".
sanmac, charged is when there is enough evidence to get the case to court.
Let’s hope he is not another one who will be released after questioning .
