General policy in stores is not to approach violent nutters, danny - you let trained security or the police do it - one false move by an untrained member of staff in an attempt at restraint and the store gets sued for assault.

I remember reading about this at the time, seems ages ago now. I don't blame anyone for not intervening - better to get out the way of harm rather than trying to protect stock.
