I keep reading things that say nowhere is England is more than 70 or 80 miles to the sea - but I don't understand that, as when you look at a map of England and take say Coventry which is pretty much central is it well over 100 miles to the nearest coast. How do they measure it?

About 13 miles from here
Coventry is too far south. The West Midlands is closer to the Severn Estuary than the village of Coton is.
Coventry's about 50 miles from the Wash or from Flint.

You can check as-crow-flies distances here

They measure by straight line, not roads
19 miles from me (Handforth).
1/4 mile for me.
Were you to remove the word 'nowhere' and slot in ..
'most places in England are no more than 70 or 80 miles from the sea'.. then you are a bit closer to the making the correct statement !

It should only make a difference if you are thinking of walking or driving .. that's assuming you live in Coventry.
About a mile for me.
I live in Oxford - not sure if thats further than Coventry from the sea. I think the nearest place from here would be West Wittering. A beautiful place.
Southampton would be closer wouldn't it?
If the tide is in it's 300m for me, if it's out I have a little further to go to get my toes wet... :o)
and re Coventry, google maps on as the crowflies setting tells me it's only about 63miles to the nearest (that I can see) sea going left, and about 70 ish going right
I used to be about the same as jackthehat 300m but these days it is nearly a mile in East Devon.
The place furthest from the sea in England is Latitude 52 deg 43.2'N, Longitude 1Deg 32.2'W. Which is very close to Coton In The Elms Derbyshire.
Togo, you're about 10 degrees in the latitude, that's about 60 miles.
If I walk 100 yards I’m up a creek.
But have you got a paddle?
From where I live I can see the Sea. Remember the skit. I see the sea, I want to pee.
I'm not that close obviously....but I have tried. :))
