Watching Neighbours yesterday and the story was about a pride festival they were putting on. One of the characters said oh the queer community will love this and again the word was mentioned by one of the other characters and not with any malice. It took be aback really as I don't think I've heard that on our screens for a long time.

I heard it on a TV show a few weeks ago in relation to LGBT, and I wondered the same thing as the word itself means odd or strange.

It does tigger but in this context is was describing the gay community. Just wondered if it is a word still be used in Australia.
I think that if it was used here it would cause offence.
Queer eye for the Straight Guy is still on TV
Question Author
woofgang is Queer Eye a description of a gay person? If not, then it isn't comparable.
Gay people use the word "queer" all the time to describe themselves, and that's fine. Non-gay people using it is not acceptable.
We in the UK are offended for the sake of being offended now, all so stupid
Question Author
woofgang I see that is an American reality show so perhaps it is a word still used in America? I often wonder if the President knows what we refer to as a Trump!
Does it really matter? These old common useage adjectives have been hijacked by the minority. If it is deemed offensive then make up a new adjective. I once described the late Mikey as a ‘bachelor gay’ and some morons found it offensive.
Obviously no fans of musicals.

I didn't know that gingejbee. Does this mean I can go up to someone in this country who is gay and ask them how long have they been queer?
Question Author
retro , I don't know, that's what I'm trying to find out.

Perhaps I should have worded it differently as, Is this word still used in this country to describe a gay person.
barsel...depends....on how sensitive they are about it and who else is listening!
Barsel its how they describe themselves...its a group of gay blokes who help straight blokes refresh the way they dress and so on. https://www.digitalspy.com/queer-eye/
Barsel would you go up to someone in the street and ask them how long they had been' homosexual'? What an ignorant ( in the lack of knowledge sense) thing to say! Why not approach the next big black guy you meet and ask him how long he's been black...….
In LGBTQ+, the "Q" stands for "queer" ...
Black people can call eachother the 'N' word but for anyone else its an insult. Same with the Gay community. They can call a friend an old queer but you as a straight person can't (well you can but its not PC)
My grandparents generation the word when they weren't feeling well.

Used the word!
My hairdresser calls himself a queer, he’s got the ability to see the funny side of things and the word doesn’t offend him in the slightest
