Telephone Numbers - How Many Do You Have?

i recently wen to Virgin and have been having trouble with my landline - it's finally been sorted but the engineer said it was because i have a 10 digit number rather than 11. their system tried to insert an extra number making my number wrong. The engineer aid it was unusual to have a 10 digit number.
Is that true? Do you have 10 or 11? How many areas of the country have 10? Do any areas have more than 11 or fewer than 10?

mine has 11 if you count the 0 at the start of the area code.

Using my fingers I have discovered that I have 11 digits in my phone number. STD code is 5 digits long and number is 6.

Newbury has a 5 digit area code and some 5 digit numbers, hence 10.

That's interesting. I was under the impression that the UK national telephone number allocation was now all 0 plus 10 digits (short codes excepted). Can't think why there'd still be exceptions.

All of the above have 10-digit numbers (although there are also 11-digit numbers in Lancaster, Penrith and Whitehaven, as well as the 10-digit ones), except for Brampton, which is the only place in the country with 9-digit numbers. [That's Brampton near to Carlisle, not the one in Cambridgeshire]. Everywhere else has 11-digit numbers.
