Do you want to go the traditional or modern route?  I actually quite like the silver money boxes/rattles etc but they are quite cliched.

Either way really... The silver rattle sounds like a nice idea.  I'm just stuck for something to buy?

I found this site:

http://www.baby-gifts.co.uk/

they have some really nice stuff, have a look.

great site Nicola.  There is so much to choose from....thank you so much!
That's okay.  Glad my boredom at work has some useful results sometimes! :-)

How about a tree? Something symbolic of the month they were born or christened. There's quite a few tree gift sites - his parents can plant it in the garden and watch it grow with their child.

I got my best friend's daughter's birth chart drawn up - but you need to check if this is appropriate, and how religious your friends are. Other ideas include a framed print for their room (something child oriented) , a keepsake treasury of traditional children's stories, a cutlery set (practical), a traditional toy such as a hobby horse or wooden train set or something collectable like a dinky car (or the like.).

My son got about five silver money boxes, ten silver photo albums and frames, two cutlery sets and three first tooth/curl sets...beautiful presents and we were very grateful but I am afraid they ended up stored in a cupboard!

Some excellent idea's there nykkieberry - I like the tree and the dinky car idea.
My mate had a baby boy about 2 years ago and I got him (the baby) an engraved silver hip flask! It was a masterstroke and really contrasted against all the small blue chairs and silver baby stuff. I suppose it depends greatly on the type of people your mate and their other half are (it'd be lost on non-drinkers, perhaps even offensive) but I thought it would be worth suggesting.

While I'm here, the same mate has just had a baby girl and I'll be shopping too shortly. I'm struggling to get something as innovative (depending on your point of view). Have you got any ideas?
I got my niece a snowglobe & she loved watching it, they do some really nice ones in the disney store.
I found this website for a christening gift I bought last month from my niece http://www.babygiftgallery.co.uk . I bought the little petal gift box which came in this amazing personalised gift box. I was looking for something ununusal, a wee bit luxurious but at a decent price. service was great as well - it was delivered the next day.
dont bother bying any tat ... you always get loads .. buy some premium bonds or open a bank account its so much more appreciated
